Beer Fact of the Week - Bill "the Fox" Foster

Bill “the Fox” Foster was a legend. As perhaps the best chug-a-lug champ there ever was, he could down 2 beers standing on his head faster than anyone could finish 1. He’d down a 40 oz pitcher of beer in 3.5 seconds.  People who saw it couldn’t believe their eyes. So he’d do it again.

His chugging prowess got him on tv in the 70’s & 80’s. Taxi & The Jeffersons among others.

The Detroit born Foster headed west to SoCal at the age of 26 in 1958. 3 years later he opened the Fox Inn in Santa Monica where for the next 28 years he’d sing ribald songs on what he referred to as a “whorehouse piano”.

Foster would release a live album containing songs & crude jokes entitled “Songs Banned in Boston” in 1977. A warning in all caps read, “ADULTS ONLY X RATED”. The album can be found on Youtube if you're interested.

“Songs Banned in Boston” showcased not only Foster’s humor but also his ability to command a crowd.

Unsurprisingly Foster’s songs & his style of entertainment was huge with fraternities. He’d tour the country performing in frat houses at Pac 12 & Big 10 schools & serendipitously at UNLV where, in the late 80’s a young Jimmy Kimmel saw Foster perform.

After the Fox Inn closed in 1989 Foster continued performing around SoCal before landing the gig of emcee for Comedy Central’s, “The Man Show” in 1999.

Co-creator Kimmel recruited Foster to join the show to sing bawdy ballads, chug beer & to introduce the show's hosts. Alongside Kimmel was future podcasting pioneer Adam Corolla. After the show's introductory theme song Foster would down a mug of brew in the blink of an eye.

Sadly, Foster passed away at the age of 68 in early 2000 from prostate cancer having recorded only 22 episodes of “The Man Show”.

In honor of this legend give a shout!

Zicke, Zacke, Zicke, Zacke, Hoi, Hoi, Hoi!
